Synopsis
There are ordinary scenes on the street—drawings brought together to tell a story. It is about our inner emotions and thoughts in our everyday lives.
Purpose
I enjoy feeling the texture of the paper while drawing, so I primarily work with handmade drawings. To arrive at a final image, I make many studies first. I put the sketches on the wall, and I look at them for a long time while generating ideas. At one point, I wondered if I could start with a single drawing and then use digital techniques to create a complete work. Normally, I draw using nearby subjects for reference. My subjects are those that are commonly seen in our surroundings (people, streetlamps, kids on the playground). As my eyes move, they show my changing state of mind. I tried to imbue the images of the subjects with the essence of my inner thoughts. For instance, the voice of a child’s mother (saying “It’s time to go home”) means that the child has to stop playing now. It is also the voice that brings my late-20s self back to reality. In another example, the subjects of my drawings include a streetlamp. It is a manmade object, but each streetlamp has its own unique shape. When it casts a shadow with its light, it can resemble a shape such as a tree. I want to reveal the changing shapes of objects, and show that even machines can have malleable forms. I added recordings of sounds from everyday life and thought about them while creating the movements. I collected sounds such as children playing, an old man proselytizing on the street, the noise of a bus, and the songs of birds—reflecting my own emotions. The figure at the end that walks slowly is a reflection of my inner self, and it was toward this scene that I was working all along.
