Synopsis

Ye-mi and Gang-bo are 17-year-old high school students who are about to become seniors. Gang-bo tells his friends that he will leave their band in order to focus completely on studying for the college entrance exam, so Ye-mi and Gang-bo have a fight.

Gang-bo is deeply interested in Hawaiian music, but he gives up his music because of his mother’s objections. Gang-bo feels bad for his friends because they can’t understand him. Gang-bo hesitates in the middle of the Hawaiian dance performance with his school friends. Ye-mi becomes the laughing stock on the street with her guitar, though she receives a divine revelation from the god of Rock & Roll.

Ye-mi shares a conversation with the restaurant owner where she works; he used to be a musician when he was young, but he gave up playing music. At that moment, Ye-mi sees Gang-bo’s guitar being sold. Recalling their memories of playing music together pleasantly, Ye-mi gradually begins to understand Gang-bo and the hard decision he had to make.

Purpose

I dealt with the conflicts among teenagers. Their dreams conflict with the college entrance exam, which is a real chance to make a choice. They might think that their dreams are obscure and reckless at the moment they try to assert their desire to accomplish them. It is a paradox that seniors in high school think they should give up before they have even decided anything. Students have no choice but to decide something quickly due to a shortage of time and their environment. They make hasty decisions without perceiving the importance of the issue, or they simply give up their dreams. I tried to describe the cruel moments of the two protagonists as subjectively as I could. They thought that their dreams were happy and hopeful, but they had trouble with reality. I feel close to their personal feelings during their conflicts. I did not suggest social solutions or issues, but rather I described the feelings of the protagonists: high school students in real situations. I tried to comically represent delightfulness in high school, the vague fantasy of their dreams, and the depressing reality behind the sweet fantasy with props including bears, excessive make-up, and a metal band.
