Synopsis
A boy falls in love with a girl. Since then, he could think about nothing but her. One day the girl mentions about Araby to him in passing, but the boy gets obsessed about Araby to please her as well as to keep his promise. At the end he reaches Araby, but the boy could find nothing but a number of closed stores with its curtains let down. There was only a couple chatting at the store with its light on. The boy thinks that he became a laughing stock for others, although nobody actually think so. He feels angry about his own vanity and suffers.
Purpose
One of the most important metaphor used in Araby is the relation between Anaby and love. Araby, love, and the girl contain symbolic meaning at the same level. The boy cannot understand that there is no difference between his fantasy on Aravy Bazar and his love to the girl, but he can intuitively feel it. And I believe that’s how he grows.
I also have grown up by learning little by little from a number of events that I’ve gone through my life. I had to go back and forth to Araby a lot of times, too. I was embarrassed whenever I came back to reality. If I could go back to one of those moments, I want to give a warm-hearted hug to the weeping boy.
