Synopsis
This is a tragic love story of a nobleman and a Gisaeng in the 18th century Korea which was a very rigid social hierarchy. Giesangs were the lower classes as entertainers who danced, sang and played musical instruments.
The Gisaeng and the nobleman loved each other and vowed marriage, but they were forced by someone to break apart, and the Gisaeng went blind. The nobleman who could not forget about her was able to reunite with her through the help of a friend, but the wall of reality still remained high.
Purpose
I wanted to modernize and globalize our unique traditional culture into an animation.
The class and hierarchical society was not unique to the Joseon Dynasty. There are still classes and hierarchies in the modern society that we live in. The injustices of having our freedoms and human rights suppressed in lower classes and hierarchies as well as lacking power still exist all around the world. I think that the nobleman’s actions of embracing the Gisaeng and taking the sword for her, and the Gisaeng who was forced to give up her love with the nobleman because of her low class and lack of power and was even blinded, represent true love and hope.
The reason why I did not explain in detail the individuals who forced the two apart and made the Gisaeng go blind, or how she was made to go blind, was because I wanted to show that the culprit is power or authority, or perhaps the social system that is invisible to us.
By making the apricot flower petals become more vibrant and numerous when the nobleman and Gisaeng meet, I attempted to express that their love became stronger and deeper.
The reason why I refrained from high or low angles and focused on eye-level angles was to show that the theme of this piece is not the high or low position of a class but humanistic universality.
The theme song is in English despite the story being based in Korea because English is a common language around the world, and I wanted to express that this theme was not a problem limited to Korea but of the whole world. For a similar reason, the gayageum, an instrument representative of Korea, and the piano, which is a representative western instrument, were harmonized.
